Dear Member

We wait for the rains to stop and the river to drop; as at 5pm yesterday the level was still at 4.61 metres in Yarra Glen, above the level for moderate flooding. This is the first of what will be regular Project Updates to keep the MGC community aware of the progress we are making in our efforts to once again participate in our sport at the Melbourne Gun Club.

While we can only wait on the water, we aren’t sitting on our hands. Wednesday night saw the MGC Flood Working Group meet and agree on the structure of Project Recovery; our remediation project to bring our club back to operating condition as soon as possible.

Leading the Project, setting the direction and priority of works will be a Steering Group comprised of Dallas Ball, Craig Henwood, Paul Schroeter and Ben Reed. Supporting the Steering Group are nine Operational Workstream Leaders each with responsibility for a functional area of the club’s facilities or a specific field of technical works expertise such as trap recovery and repair. Additional workstreams can be set up as more is known.  Providing support across all the workstreams and reporting to the Steering Group will be Andrew Nash in the role of Project Manager and Resource Co-ordinator.

Andrew will act as the point of entry into the project. Along with the leaders, Andrew will facilitate planning, communication and the allocation of resources/trades to ensure balanced support across all workstreams, based on the competing priorities and developments in the wider project.

We have received numerous approaches with offers of assistance and we will certainly need a lot of help, but until now we have had no way of recording and collating all those offers. Therefore, a new Email address has been setup to provide a single point of contact directly accessing to the project team. Anyone who would like to offer help can now do so by email to: recovery@melbournegunclub.com.

Further updates will be provided as things progress.

CCTC Skeet Carnival 2017

The hard work and efforts of a great team in putting together a combined NSSA 500 as well as the Caboolture Clay Target Clubs annual Skeet Carnival were rewarded with some outstanding shooting and great compliments on the event.
Thursday morning started bright and sunny and the warm temperatures were very welcome for the inter-state and New Zealand visitors.  With the NSSA events filled to capacity, all shooters were advised in advance of their shooting times and squad positions so the first event (100 target doubles) started promptly at 8.30am.

NSW shooters started their domination of the 4 days with Shane Bennett of NSW emerging the overall doubles champion with a score of 98/100.  Shane then followed this up with a 99/100 in the 20g event after a shoot off with Paulette Walker who was thrilled with here score of 99 and hopes this will help raise her NSSA classification.

The weather wasn’t quite so kind on day 2 with showers predicted for the day.  However the disappointment of the weather was soon overcome with the smell of hot roast being cooked for Mathew Rhue’s famous hot pork and gravy rolls which were served at lunchtime.
The rain didn’t dampen Wayne Petersen’s shooting ability when he took the overall 28g championship with a fabulous 99/100.  Mal Briggs followed this with a 96/100 in the .410 event to take that championship title.

Saturday’s weather was back to the bright and sunny QLD weather with clear blue skies, temperatures close to mid 20’s and not a breeze to be felt.  It looked like some good scores were about to the shot in the 12g event and the commencement of the 2017 CCTC Skeet Carnival.  Jaco Pieterse in squad one was the first person to post a 100 straight and this was quickly followed by another 100 from Wayne Petersen.  Finally a QLD win with Jaco Pieterse winning the shoot off and the first of the carnival sashes.  However, an equally big smile was on the face of John Pethybridge shooting a 50 straight in the first half of the event to finish on 95/100.

The combined 12g event saw the end of the NSSA 500 with NSW taking out both the NSSA HOA and HAA titles.

Saturday afternoon concluded with the ever popular Super Handicap event and much discussion about which gauge to use.  The great conditions saw over half the entries get through to the first round of shoot offs including B Grade Tahnee Davenport shooting her first ever 50 straight and Tracey Ashton being regraded to AA Grade.
Round after round was completed with Shane Bennett , Mal Briggs, Allan McKenzie, Tahnee Davenport and Rodney Kneipp  being the last five shooters.  Shane Bennett (12g) emerged the eventual winner from Mal Briggs (28g) with a final score of 168/168.  Great shooting!
The great targets and fabulous conditions meant that Saturdays score board saw 5 shooters with a score of 149/150 going into the final day and a few others close behind on 148.
The 50 target event saw yet more perfect scores shot and 7 shooters headed out for a doubles shoot off with Glenn Walker and Mal Briggs battling out the final stations for Glenn to emerge the eventual winner with a score of 66/66.

It always comes down to the doubles……….  Shane Bennett, Wayne Petersen, Lorraine Hughes and Mal Briggs were all on 199/200 going into the last event.  Shane and Wayne’s determination and friendly rivalry saw them both post the top score of 49/50 to see them into both a shoot off for the doubles as well as a high gun shoot off.
The doubles shoot offs were completed with Shane emerging the winner.

The hotly contested two person team scores were being monitored closely and it was great to see a shoot off between the teams of Shane Bennett and Nigel Hughes against Wayne Petersen and Sarah Bennett.  There was some friendly sledging as the teams lined up on station three and Nigel and Shane were the winners for the 4th time in 5 years.
The crowd gathered at the fence line to watch Shane and Wayne battle it out for a shot at the ultimate high gun prize with Wayne really wanting to make it a back to back win for him.  3 brackets of high gun sequence were shot before Wayne succeeded in becoming overall High Gun winner making it a back to back win for him.

The prize giving commenced within 5 minutes of the final shoot off being completed.  The sponsors were warmly thanked for their generous support of the event.  Presentation certificates were awarded along with the prize money for the NSSA.  Sashes were presented to all of the winners and the prize money of over $5,500 was awarded including $600 for the overall high gun winner.  It is not very often that shooting is profitable but Shane and Wayne would certainly of had a minimal net cost of their very successful trip.

The final presentation was the for the popular skeet quiz winner to win back their nominations and the tie break jar full of lollies.  A young Lea-Anne Walker showed considerable interest in the lolly jar and spent a lot of time considering how many were in there, she must have told her dad because Glenn proceeded to win back the cost of his nominations and give Lea-Anne the lolly jar – she should be enjoying that for some time to come.
