2011 State Skeet Carnival
Melbourne Gun Club
4-6 February

Report by Jacqui Durham

It was a weekend of all seasons that saw some of the best skeet shooters in Australia converge on the Melbourne Gun Club for the Victorian State Skeet Carnival, February 4th, 5th and 6th. The sun, rain, humidity and wind didn't stop the 73 shooters from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia making their way to the beautifully presented grounds for a weekend of great shooting and great company.

Friday the 4th of February saw a very humid day with a few rain showers that did nothing to bring down the temperature. The 50 target Victorian State Skeet 20 Gauge was the first event to be shot, and the bar was set high early, with David O'Sullivan, Eddy Elder and Blake Slater all posting 50s on the board. After a brief shoot off, Blake Slater emerged victorious to take the overall with a score of 55/55.
There were plenty of shooters just on their tails, and after a number of shoot offs the results were finalised.

The second event on Friday the 4th was the 50 target Victorian State Skeet Handicap. Although the showers increased as the afternoon wore on, the rain did nothing to dampen the skill levels of the shooters. After the initial 50 targets were shot, the shoot off commenced with about 6 squads of shooters still in the hunt. As the shooters slowly dropped out so did the light, and the remaining 3 squads were forced to retire for the evening and come back in the morning.

The shooters remaining in the handicap came back on Saturday the 5th of February to continue the shoot off.  The heavens opened up and before long everyone was drenched, including the road leading into the gun club! Eventually there remained only one squad, and the top 5 places were left to be sorted out. First to drop out was Max Oakley, coming in 5th with a score of 133/135. Blake Slater and Christian Lagos both dropped out on the same target, and had to shoot off for 3rd and 4th place. 4th was awarded to Blake Slater, 147/150, while Christian Lagos finished in 3rd, 143/150.

With only two shooters left, Peter Finn from New South Wales and Leigh Roberts from Victoria, the rain continued to bucket down. Peter Finn was the last to go (not before shooting his first 50 break though!), with a score of 147/154, leaving Leigh Roberts to take the overall with a very impressive 154/154.

With the shoot off for the Handicap sorted out, it was time for everyone to head out into the dowpour and shoot the 100 target Victorian State Skeet Championship. Again the shooters seemed unbothered by the rain, with Mal Briggs, Gil Farish, Michael Buttigieg and Shane O'Brien all shooting possibles. (Congratulations on your first hundred Michael!) One lengthy shoot off later, (And Michael turning his 100 break into a 150 break!) the overall went to Shane O'Brien with a fantastic score of 166/166. The quality of the shooting was obvious as most of the grades and sections were decided with shoot offs.

With the shooting finished for the day, but the rain still coming down, the shooters waited with bated breath to find out whether the shoot would continue on to the Sunday. With the drive way flooded, and the road in half underwater, the fate of the Victorian State Skeet Carnival was in the hands of the committee. All the shooters were told to check the website in the morning, and with little more that could be done, everyone went home and prayed to the Rain Gods...

Sunday the 6th of February saw everyone up early and logging on to their computers to find out if the shoot was still on. It was!! With a warning of 4x4's only, and an offer of ferrying those without them, everyone headed back out to the Melbourne Gun Club to shoot the last day of the Skeet Carnival. Almost everyone made it through the floods (there was a little car trouble for some!) and the preparations began for the first event of the day, the 50 target Melbourne Gun Club Skeet Champion of Champions. It was the maiden voyage for this particular event, which has replaced the 50 target VCTA Championship. The event is shot 25 12 gauge, 25 20 gauge and hopefully by next year, it will be ratified into a State Title.

The weather for Sunday saw a few more showers but this time with the rain came the cold, and everyone was rugging up against the harsh winds. Although the heavy breeze made the targets fairly difficult, some excellent shooting from Gil Farish and David O'Sullivan saw these two post another two possibles. Another brief shoot later, and Gil Farish took out the overall with a score of 55/56.

The last event of the 2011 Victorian State Skeet Carnival was the 50 target Victorian State Skeet Doubles. The conditions were extremely trying as the increasing winds played havoc with the targets, and not to mention the very brave (or stupid) little possum that found a home in the high house chute of ground 5! Despite all of the distractions though, with an amazing score of 49/50, Eddy Elder won the overall, no shoot off required.

With all of the events of the Carnival shot, the only thing left to decide was the High Guns.

The Overall High Gun was won by Gil Farish, on 296/300. A massive congratulations to Gil, 4 targets down over a weekend of all seasons is a phenomenal achievement.

A shoot off was needed to determine the winner of the AA grade High Gun, and that was between Paul Johnston and Leigh Roberts, both on 293/300. After an extremely impressive display of shooting from both shooters over the weekend, Leigh Roberts came out as leader at the end of the 14 targets, with a score of 307/314.

The A Grade High Gun was won by Blake Slater, with a score of 294/300. Blake had a fantastic weekend of shooting, and has now moved up to AA.
As a member of the ASSA, Blake also became the first recipient of the $100 graded high gun cash incentive offered by the association to all graded high guns at State Skeet Carnivals.

Equally impressive was Barry Moss, who won the B Grade High Gun with a score of 279/300. Barry was also a recipient of the ASSA $100 cash incentive, and with his great weekend, has moved up to A grade.

The C Grade High Gun went to Paul Slater, scoring 251/300. Paul had a very consistent weekend of shooting, and also received the ASSA $100 cash incentive.
Once again, Lorraine Hughes showed her shooting quality by taking out the Ladies High Gun with a score of 274/300. A perennial top performer, Lorraine continues to have the men watching over their shoulders.

Reg Petts showed more of his fabulous form and won the Veterans High Gun on 278/300. An all round top bloke, Reg is an asset to the sport of Skeet shooting and a very fine shooter.

The Junior High Gun was won by Eddy Elder, with a score of 292/300. Eddy continues to impress with not only his shooting but his attitude as well.

With all the High Guns decided, that concluded the 2011 Victorian State Skeet Carnival.

I'm sure I speak for all of the participants when I send a massive thank you to the Melbourne Gun Club and everyone who helped out over the weekend, particularly Paul Johnston, Adrian Cousins, Steve Pellagrino and John Mollica who ensured the shoot ran smoothly from start to finish.

Thanks must also go to Jenny Porcellana for her wonderful work in the office, and to our Webmaster, Ivan Spiller who, on short notice, updated the website with the status for Sunday's events. All of the kitchen and bar staff, the trap boys, everyone who helped get the traps out to avoid the floods, all of the referees and scorers, and anyone else who may have been forgotten.

And finally, a huge thank you to all of the shooters for coming to Melbourne Gun Club, especially all of the travelers and making the weekend fantastic despite the weather.
